Rombauer Wins the Preakness, Surging as Medina Spirit Fades to Third
BALTIMORE (AP) – On Saturday, Medina Spirit was up against a lot more than just nine other competitors on the course. His opponents included an ex-president who had dubbed him “a junkie,” late-night comedians, and a suspicious audience who had watched him win the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago but flunk a subsequent drug test. It took Medina Spirit a mile and three sixteenths to make its way around Pimlico Race Course, where it had a commanding lead for much of it. However, so much was on the line: the colt’s reputation, another record for his absent trainer, Bob Baffert, and the integrity of an old and damaged sport that desperately needs to be revitalized.
A long-shot colt called Rombauer, however, took the lead early in the race and cruised down the center of the lane like a steamboat caught in the downstream current of the Mississippi River, winning by three and a half lengths.
Many people feel that the correct horse was victorious.
The sense of accomplishment that Rombauer’s trainer, Michael McCarthy, and his jockey, Flavien Prat, felt in the winner’s circle was not diminished in the least by that fact.
- ‘It just goes to show you that even little participants in the game can be successful,’ said McCarthy, who owns and maintains a modest stable in Southern California.
- Image Photograph courtesy of Will Newton/Associated Press For Prat, a Frenchman, it was a long-awaited moment of fame.
- Maximum Security was the first to cross the finish line at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May, beating him by a head.
- Practise in a new environment, he advised.
- According to Churchill Downs authorities, if the presence of the drug was confirmed in a second testing, the horse would be disqualified and Mandaloun, the runner-up, would be crowned the winner.
- The outcome of this investigation is likely to be revealed in the coming weeks.
- He is well aware that his bid for a fourth Derby victory is in risk.
Until he isn’t anymore.
“He’s just been beaten.” And what happened to Baffert?
He did a series of television and radio appearances, in which he floated a number of different explanations regarding why the colt had tested positive for betamethasone in the first place.
Photograph by Julio Cortez for the Associated Press In a statement released on Monday, Baffert condemned Churchill Downs’ ban of him as “unfair,” blamed the situation on “cancel culture,” and said that racing officials were trying to get him.
Baffert announced last fall that he had hired Dr.
The veterinarian was never recruited, according to Baffert’s attorney, who has said that this was the case within the last week.
The medicine is prominently indicated on the ointment’s container, as shown in the photos.
Baffert turned down repeated requests from The New York Times to make his colt’s records public, including one from the newspaper’s sports section.
With no central authority and laws that are inconsistently implemented, it is only in a sport like horse racing that Baffert and the owners of Pimlico could reach an arrangement to allow for extended drug testing in exchange for permitting the colt to compete this weekend.
The emotional McCarthy cut his news conference short with a line that is undoubtedly now famous to casual horse racing fans all over the world, while Baffert remained in isolation in his home state of California.
“I’m heading to the test barn,” McCarthy remarked, referring to the location where urine and blood samples are collected. Anyone who is a fan of horse racing is holding their breath in the hopes that the tests will be negative.
Who won the Preakness Stakes in 2021? Full results, finish order & highlights from the race
In the year 2021, there will be no Triple Crown winner. When Rombauer astonished everyone by winning the race by two lengths over second-place finisher Midnight Bourbon, it was a 12-to-1 shot to win. A strong performance by Medina Spirit, the betting favorite to win the Preakness Stakes in 2021, who led the pack of ten horses for the first three-quarters of the 1 3/16-mile race in Baltimore on Saturday. After a strong start, the 3-year-old colt was unable to maintain his momentum and finished third behind Rombauer and Midnight Bourbon.
Now, regardless of whether or not that occurs, the Triple Crown will not be altered.

Winner Preakness
To win the 146th Preakness Stakes for jockey Flavien Prat and trainer Michael McCarthy, Rombauer produced a last-second surge down the stretch to get clear of Midnight Bourbon and Medina Spirit. Prior to the race, Flavien Prat and Rombauer were considered underdogs, with odds of 12-1. The victory was Trainer Michael McCarthy’s first victory in a Triple Crown race, as well as the first Preakness victory for owners John and Dianne Fradkin, who were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Rombauer, who won the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields on February 13 by a margin of 3 12 lengths over Midnight Bourbon in 1:53.62 while covering the 1 3/16-mile course in 1:53.62, had earned a fees-paid place into the Preakness by winning the ‘WinIn’ event, the El Camino Real Derby.
- After establishing pace for the opening half-mile in splits of 23.77 and 46.93 seconds, Midnight Bourbon was closely tracked to his outside up the backstretch and into the far turn, where he finished second.
- Midnight Bourbon managed to sneak by the leader in the last stretch, but Rombauer loomed large on the far outside and continued on to claim a convincing victory.
- Irad Ortiz Jr.
- Midnight Bourbon was the 3-1 second betting choice, ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr.
Preakness Stakes 2021 winner: Rombauer races to upset win, Derby winner Medina Spirit finishes third
The winner of the Triple Crown race was determined by a surprise for the second consecutive year. Rombauer, who entered the race with 11/1 odds, won the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, pushing past favorites Medina Spirit and Midnight Bourbon to claim the victory down the stretch in Baltimore. The victory marked a pair of firsts for the team who supported the horse. First and foremost, Flavien Prat, the jockey on Rombauer, won the Preakness Stakes for the first race in his professional career, a first for any jockey.
Medina Spirit jumped out to an early lead and maintained it for the most of the match, evoking memories of the Kentucky Derby in the early going.
When Rombauer came out of the middle, he had a second wind that no other horse in the race seemed to have for the final stretch. In the end, the horse pulled away from the other two early contenders and won by four lengths to claim the victory.
2021 Preakness Stakes Payouts
An unexpected champion was crowned in the Triple Crown for the second consecutive year. Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer beat favorites Medina Spirit and Midnight Bourbon in the last strides of the race, despite the fact that he was given 11/1 odds going into the race on Saturday. With this victory, the team behind the horse achieved a pair of firsts. In the first instance, Flavien Prat, the jockey who rode Rombauer to victory in the Preakness Stakes, accomplished a first-time triumph. Two-fold, at the second leg of the Triple Crown this year, trainer Michael McCarthy earned his first victory.
The only significant challenge to the Baffert-trained horse’s early-race lead came from Midnight Bourbon, who momentarily appeared to be on the verge of forcing a photo finish against the Kentucky Derby champion -at least as of this writing.
In the end, the horse pulled away from the other two early contenders and won by four lengths to take the victory.
Rombauer upsets Medina Spirit to win Preakness
15th of May, 2021 BALTIMORE – Rombauer has left Medina Spirit in the past – and has placed the newest scandal in horse racing on the back burner. Preakness winner Rombauer pulled off an 11-1 surprise on Saturday, overtaking Bob Baffert’s Kentucky Derby winner to put a stop to a prospective Triple Crown attempt that would have been dogged by a large exclamation point if it had happened. After finishing third, Medina Spirit will not be able to compete in the Belmont Stakes, even if a Triple Crown is on the line and a potential Derby disqualification hangs over the sport.
- He chose to remain away because of the issue surrounding Medina Spirit.
- Instead, it is about Medina Spirit and all of the other equine athletes who compete in this incredible sport of horseback riding.” Despite this, all eyes were on Medina Spirit, the 2-1 favorite, as well as Baffert and his second Preakness contender, Concert Tour, who was sent out at 4-1.
- J.
- “I was well aware that he was going to be questioned today.
- “Mike Smith, who rode Midnight Bourbon in the Kentucky Derby before switching to Concert Tour for the Preakness, was at a lost for words after winning the Preakness.
- He really wouldn’t budge, and when I put my hands on my hips, he only backed off a little further.
- The results of those three rounds of testing came back on Friday, allowing them to compete.
That money was set aside for at least the 1:53.62 it took Rombauer to complete the 1 3/16-mile event, which paid $26.50 for first place, $10 for second place, and $5.20 for third place overall.
However, it is not known how long this will take.
“He showed up on time.
Moreover, he hasn’t arrived yet, all at the same moment.” A Triple Crown victory and Preakness victory for Rombauer trainer Michael McCarthy, who served as an assistant for Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher before establishing his own stable, marked a first for the trainer.
Unlike Medina Spirit’s Zedan Racing Stables and other horse racing conglomerates, Rombauer is owned by John and Diane Fradkin, who are a world away from Medina Spirit.
As McCarthy spoke about Rombauer and everyone connected with him, tears welled up in her eyes.
“The Fradkins should be pleased.
Flavien Prat won the Preakness two years after being upgraded to the Derby winner atop Country House when Maximum Security was disqualified from the race in the previous year.
“It brings me a great deal of pleasure.” The Preakness was raced in front of a limited capacity of 10,000 people, a fraction of the audience of 100,000 or more that regularly fills Pimlico on the third Saturday in May.
Because to city and track standards, masks were still necessary on the track.
This was a quick turnaround from the 2020 Preakness, which was held last autumn as the third leg of the Triple Crown without the presence of any spectators permitted. This article was written with assistance from the Associated Press.
Watch Rombauer win 2021 Preakness with a dramatic, last-second pass
In the 146th running of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Rombauer prevailed over Midnight Bourbon and Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, who were both in the lead late in the race. Medina Spirit, the favorite despite the doping allegations involving trainer Bob Baffert that erupted last week, as well as Midnight Bourbon, got out to a fast start in the first race. And as long as Medina Spirit held a little edge, it appeared as though the horse may win the first two legs of the Triple Crown of horse racing.
Midnight Bourbon had moved just ahead of Medina Spirit in the final stretch, but Rombauer raced out from the outside and appeared to easily blow by the two late frontrunners, according to the results of the race.
Midnight Bourbon came in second place, followed by Medina Spirit in third place, and KeepMeInMind in fourth place, respectively.

Rombauer Wins 2021 Preakness Stakes
Rombauer, trained by Mike McCarthy, won the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, taking first place in the 146th running of the race. During the race at Pimlico Race Course, the thoroughbred, ridden by Flavien Prat, finished slightly ahead of Midnight Bourbon, ending Medina Spirit’s ambition to become the 14th horse to win the Triple Crown. Midnight Bourbon and Medina Spirit came in second and third place, respectively, in the competition. It was only possible to bring in 10,000 people, but the Derby, which took place a few weeks earlier, drew 51,838 people, making it the highest turnout at an American athletic event since the epidemic began.
- The Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, as well as two of Bob Baffert’s other horses, awaited clearance to run in the Preakness Stakes, resulting in more controversy than in prior years coming up to race day.
- In order to allow the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to undertake an inquiry, Churchill Downs Racetrack has placed Baffert on administrative leave.
- This isn’t the first time Baffert has been embroiled in a drug-related controversy.
- In the month leading up to this year’s Kentucky Derby, Baffert was successful in his appeal, claiming that the positive tests were caused by a discomfort patch worn by his aide, who saddled the horses.
- All three horses passed the tests and were permitted to run in the race.
During the Preakness, Medina Spirit and Concert Tour competed against one other, while Beautiful Gift competed in the George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes against Medina Spirit. More coverage of horse racing may be found at:

Rombauer wins the 146th Preakness Stakes
Bay colt Rombauer won the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, the second leg of horse racing’s prestigious Triple Crown. It was the 146th running of the race. Because of the surprising victory, the controversial Medina Spirit will not be able to compete for the Triple Crown. “Oh, what a sensation,” jockey Flavien Prat said after the race. “Oh, what a feeling.” The odds on Rombauer, a Kentucky-bred horse, were 11-1. His trainer is Michael W. McCarthy, and his owners, John and Diane Fradkin of Santa Ana, California, are the proud owners of this handsome hound.
- In the midst of the Kentucky Derby controversy surrounding the failure of Medina Spirit’s post-racedrug test, the race was held.
- Organizers had reached an agreement with Baffert, the Southern California-based trainer who has won a record seven Kentucky Derby races, to put the colt through a series of tests ahead of Saturday’s event.
- The studies conducted by Industrial Laboratories in Colorado and the Maddy Laboratory at the University of California at Davis, on the other hand, have not dissuaded opponents.
- In response to the issue, PETA sent a statement on Twitter.
- It was announced on Thursday that a group of Kentucky Derby bettors had launched a class-action lawsuit against Baffert in Los Angeles federal court.
- We will take the necessary steps to have it dismissed as soon as possible.” On Saturday, Baffert issued a statement stating that he will not be attending the race at Pimlico.
- Medina Spirit was treated for dermatitis with a topical ointment called Otomax, which includes the race-banned betamethasone, according to Baffert, who stated on Tuesday that the positive drug test was caused by the topical ointment.
- The Preakness Stakes was broadcast live on NBC.

In the event he returns, he poses a significant threat. MM: If the “other” Baffert shows up, he has a lot going for him if he brings his “A” game; the proper type of trip puts him right in the thick of things.
