The Sham Stakes, a prelude to the Kentucky Derby, marks the start of our horse racing season in the United States. The Grade III race is held at Santa Anita and provides a valuable opportunity for sophomores to flourish early in their careers. Later in the month, things really start to pick up speed in preparation for the new year. Both the main race and the turf event are held at the Pegasus World Cup Invitational in Las Vegas. The Pegasus World Cup itself is for riders aged 4 and above who can go over 1 1/8 mile.

Even though there are other races on the Kentucky Derby Trail, the first genuinely significant one takes place in February. Given the recent record of Florida’s thoroughbreds, the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park might once again be one of the most important early horse races of the year. In recent years, the Risen Star has also been very potent. It focuses everyone’s attention on Fairgrounds, while Tampa Bay has a chance to give its own crucial Kentucky Derby preparation.

The Triple Crown is completed in a whirlwind of activity in early June during Belmont’s spectacular summer meet. Almost all of the Grade I action in the United States takes place in New York on the first Saturday in June. The Acorn and the Belmont Stakes are reserved for sophomores, while the Metropolitan Handicap (often known as the ‘Met Mile’) is reserved for older horses.

In July, the three-year-olds will compete in another major event, the Haskell at Monmouth. In four months, the Breeders’ Cup will be held, after which the Triple Crown will be completed again. Nonetheless, there are other major horse races scheduled in the near future.

This is the point at which the whole American horse racing schedule builds towards. As the Breeders’ Cup gets underway in California, live streaming of key horse races is reaching an all-time high. This year, Del Mar will have 14 championship races ranging in distance from 512 furlongs to 114 miles on grass and dirt, with races for juveniles, older horses, fillies, and colts, as well as for large purse money.
All trainers look forward to the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, which will take place at Del Mar on November 2nd after the Triple Crown, Pacific Classic, Haskell and Travers. This is just one of several major horse races that will take place at Del Mar in the following months.
