On Wednesday, a lawyer for Medina Spirit’s owner informed CNBC that the horse’s blood had been tested for the presence of the illegal drug betamethasone for the second time. Medina Spirit was the winner of the Kentucky Derby. The likelihood that Medina Spirit’s victory on May 1 would be reversed by Kentucky racing officials and that Mandaloun, who finished second on that day, will be proclaimed the winner grows dramatically with the second positive test being obtained. The entity that manages Churchill Downs Racetrack — the venue of the Kentucky Derby — announced that Baffert had been suspended for two years immediately upon the announcement of the results of the test.

Only two of Baffert’s seven victories have been backed at double-digit odds: War Emblem at 21-1 in 2002 and Medina Spirit at 11-1 this year, respectively.
