- Be a positive role model! If so, do you have a proven track record in the show ring with your horse? Do you have a fantastic temperament? Is he a PROVEN producer with a track record? Does he/she have a CHAMPION pedigree (close-up, as in champion SIRE, champion DAM, champion grand sire, champion grand dam, or champion siblings)? If so, that is something to be proud of. Just make sure you have evidence to support your claims. (Subscriptions to AMHAAMHR Studbooks are particularly helpful if you are selling or purchasing a large quantity of items. However, even if the horse has received the aforementioned prizes prior to your ownership of him, his winning show record belongs to the HORSE, and you may use it to advertise his sale
- Berealistic. When it comes to selling horses, you can’t afford to be “barn blind.” While pedigree is essential, it is not the be-all and end-all — your horse must be able to stand on his or her own merits. A “great great grandchild” of a famous horse is insufficient justification for a hefty price tag
- Yet,
- Maintain a professional demeanor. Always. Selling may be an unpleasant experience – and individuals can be frustrating as well. Be open to offers
- A lesser offer from someone who would show and promote your horse/breeding may be worth considering (and keep in mind your Canalways counter offer)
- And don’t be annoyed by emails from “kids” – they are the future and may be possible purchasers.
- Be thorough- PHOTOS are what first attract purchasers, so only publish photos of your horse that are flattering to her. I’m a great supporter of well-done professional photographs. Potential purchasers will be drawn to them and get interested in learning more about your horse – but you should also have other non-professional images available. Foreign purchasers, in particular, want to see good images of your horse – from the left and right sides, from the front and back, and from the bite. Keep in mind that you should be level with your horse when taking these shots, rather than looking down at him, since this can distort the horse’s proportions. MOST people (including myself) cannot see through 2 inches of hair, so if you are unable to supply images of your horse with its mane and tail cropped, you might consider delaying the sale until you can – or be prepared to accept LESS money for your horse. Additionally, a VIDEO is incredibly vital for any horse – ESPECIALLY for one that is being offered for sale as a driving horse.
- Bepatient. Some horses sell quickly, while others may take longer

- Beprepared. Make sure you have those great “pasture” photosbite pictures on hand! Do you want to be at the top of your game? – How about a VIDEO showing the horse being measured, so that customers may verify that your information is correct? You should be prepared to respond to a large number of questions. The higher the asking price, the more questions the buyer is likely to have. There are a LOT of good horses available on the market right now. If you want to sell YOURS, be prepared to put in the necessary effort to make the transaction.
- Make sure everything is grammatically proper. Use spell-check to double-check spelling before posting your ad, and then DOUBLE-CHECK spelling after posting your ad. Not con FIRMation, but proper CONFORMATION should be the goal for your horse. The correct phrase is to SELL your horse, not to SELL yourhorse. Prior to posting your work, it is a good idea to have it proofread by someone else. YOU are aware of what is intended to be said, thus you may be skimming past typographical problems in the text (I am a master at this! )
- Bepositive. It is likely that your horse will sell if he or she is priced correctly, in good condition, and properly promoted (with flattering images and a clear, factual description).

5 Things To Consider Before You Buy A Mini Horse
Miniature horses are very lovely, and it’s no surprise that so many people are interested in owning one. With their little height and outgoing personality, they appear to be the perfect little companions. Their feed requirements are reduced, and there is an extra benefit in that they do not require as much pasture as they would otherwise.
Prior to deciding that the small life is the life for you, however, there are a few facts that should be considered. While miniature horses may make excellent companion horses, you shouldn’t hurry into purchasing one until you’re aware with the following five characteristics of owning a small horse.
Many Minis Can’t Deal with Grass
We can all imagine that caring for a tiny horse will be a piece of cake, regardless of whether we have previous horse expertise or not. To put it another way, they’re basically dogs who eat grass. Wrong. A large number of tiny horses are unable to cope with grass turnout. Even though they’re little, they have a high risk of getting overweight. Their temptation to overindulge in delicious grass is too much for them to resist, and they will eat and eat until they are dangerously fat. Additionally, minis are more prone to foundering on the lush grasses that are present across most of America, in addition to the health issues connected with being overweight.
Either that, or you’ll have to spend some money on a grazing muzzle for your horse.
You’ll Have the Same Vet and Farrier Costs
The cost of owning a small horse is significantly less expensive than the cost of owning a full-sized horse on the surface, but this is not necessarily the case. The answer is yes, minis consume less food than their full-sized counterparts. Minis may save you money on feed, but they require the same level of veterinary and farrier care as horses. Because their immunizations, teeth floated, and hoof trims are all the same price as a full-sized horse, having a tiny horse is remarkably similar to owning a full-sized horse.
Some barns provide discounts for boarding miniature horses, while others charge the standard stall rent regardless of how little the horse is.
Minis Require Training and Regular Handling
Miniatures, like horses, require training and regular handling to be successful. Although you will not be teaching your tiny horse to ride, you will still need to train your mini to be halter trained and to learn other fundamental skills.
