It is unclear what this idiom is alluding to specifically. In the horse breeding industry, it has long been noticed that if you want to produce a certain color horse, you cannot marry a mare with a completely different color coat, otherwise you will most likely end up with “a horse of a different hue.” This may have something to do with the way horses are bred. In Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, on the other hand, the opposing idiom is used: Maria: Yes, a horse of that color is exactly what I’m looking for.
Therefore, it is hypothesized that Shakespeare developed the phrase “a horse of that hue” in order to refer to anything that was of the same stuff, and that the idiom later became used to refer to things that were wholly unrelated.
The term, on the other hand, does not appear to have gained general use until the late 1800s. Idioms Beginning with the Letter H More Animal-Related Phrases and Phrases More Color Idioms to Consider Idioms with a ‘Different’ Tone More Horse Phrases and Phrases to Remember

What is race, ethnicity, nationality, and culture?
Race, ethnicity, nationality, and culture are all distinct from one another and do not exist in opposition to one another. Let us begin with the most general and certainly the most straightforward of these: culture, which may be defined as the traditional ideas or social structures and practices of any community. Culture may manifest itself in both large and tiny ways. Your close family has a distinct cultural identity. Your philosophy class in college had a distinct culture to it. Your high school may have been separated by the cultures of athletes, 4-H members, singers, thespians, and braniacs, among other things, Texans have a culture (we are all quite proud of our Texas background and are known for like things that are big!
The culture of African Americans in the southern United States may be distinct from that of African Americans in the northern United States.
Every environment has the potential to constitute a style of operation or an ethos of the people who occupy it (willingly or unwillingly!).

Fitness for Government, or fitness for a white nation?
The history of the United States has frequently come down to a question of “fitness for government,” from the “free white folks” to waves of immigration that muddled the borders of acceptable citizenship, to a conflict between whites and blacks. The link between race on the one hand and ‘capacity for self-government’ on the other was claimed by courts into the 1920s, supporting the biases of legislators in 1790 and the antebellum period. For example, “immigrants who were white enough to enter the nation as “free white individuals” may lose that status if they were associated with nonwhite organizations,” aggravating the divisions between classes based on race in the 1890s.
That the United States was prevented from acquiring “savage” nations with non-white populations who may further “muddy” the US population was not due to imperialism, but rather to anti-imperialism, a racialist logic of civilization, sovereignty, and self governance.
Throughout the nineteenth century, whiteness was subjected to a variety of political and social vicissitudes.
No 50 shades of Gray, Just Black and White
“The most tangible type of proof that race was a social convention, rather than a biological truth,” according to one scholar, was provided by judges in the courts between the 1870s and the 1920s. Race as a conceptual category was replaced by race as a perceptual category. In the early and mid-twentieth century, circumstances converged to increase the “premium on race as color and to erase the once-salient “differences” among the white races.” Whereas formerly ethnicity, culture, and certain biological characteristics distinguished amongst white immigrants (Celts, Slavs, Italians, and so on), individuals with “white-ish” complexion gradually merged into a single group that was superior to blacks.
- “Overcome prejudice and discrimination because of foreign origin or ancestry, race, or nationality,” said the Common Council for American Unity in its quarterly publication, Common Ground, which was published between 1940 and 1949.
- Throughout the magazine, “general commentary on variety” grew along two separate paths: “race,” which was mostly political in nature, and “nationality,” which was primarily cultural in nature.
- Both of these movements had a considerable impact on “the concept of race” in general, and they had particularly important ramifications for the concept of “different” as it related to the white races of Europe and the United States, in particular.
- The change from “race to ethnicity” represents a fundamental shift.
Do the Definitions even Matter?
Traditionally, race has been considered as a biological categorization, which has been reduced to: “Caucasoid, Negroid, Mongoloid,” for example. The term is a technique of categorizing people based on “skin color, hair texture, nose breadth, lip size, and slant of eyes—all characteristics that serve to determine race,” according to the Oxford English Dictionary. The above discussion, however, does not indicate that race is a perceptual social categorisation or construct. So, how true is biological simplification in this case?
Census.gov defends its classifications by stating that “the racial categories included in the census questionnaire largely reflect a sociological definition of race accepted in our nation, rather than an attempt to define race physiologically, anthropologically, or genetically.
According to the questionnaire, it is uncertain if race can exist in the absence of societal definitions.
What about you?
I inquired about your color and ethnicity at the outset of our conversation. For a long time, I couldn’t come up with a solution for my own situation. Considering that I am a white person who was reared in a largely white culture, it was similar to asking a fish whether or not the water was wet. They don’t know since it is all they are familiar with. I was under the impression that race and ethnicity descriptors were reserved for those who didn’t look like me, and I was unfamiliar with the concepts of race and whiteness.
Only after learning about the concept of race as a social construct, something that has developed through time to imply different things, did I feel comfortable acknowledging that I am a white person.
What are your thoughts?
If you are still having difficulty understanding race, you may try the following: 1) Consult with the Wizard of Oz, 2) click your heels and say “There is no place like home,” or perhaps admit that it is merely a horse of a different hue and conduct some research to understand more about racial relations in the United States of America.

In the world of horses, Rohirrim Grey is a horse of a different color. Images will be added to illustrate the text on this page while it is still under creation. This article will cover the most fundamental principles of equine color genetics and will provide visual samples to assist you in accurately describing the horses in your fictional stories. The photo links for HADEED and QADIFAN are below if you merely want to accurately describe the color of your character’s horse. A mature war-horse would most likely not be younger than 7 or 8 years old, and these two mature stallions will give you an idea of what your horse may look like when he is ready to fight.
- It is OK to use GWAIHIR and ANDURIL as samples of the amount of grey that a young saddle horse or young horse in training might exhibit if this is a saddle horse or young horse in training.
- First and first, I should point out that there can be a significant gap between a horse’s real genetic color and its visible coloration.
- The significance of this to you will vary depending on the part played by the horse in your tale.
- It’s possible that some of the additional information will be required if your character makes a statement about his horse’s ancestry or is otherwise interested in horse breeding.
- A horse with a brown coat is genetically red/chestnut in color.
- The superb grey battle-steeds of the Rohirrim were all born dark, either red or black (or a mix of the two colors) and gradually became lighter in color as they grew older.
- White and black hair are not seen on grey horses; instead, they have a mixture of white and dark hair, or white hair over dark skin on grey horses.
Horses are only seldom born in the color that they will be when they reach maturity.
Mother and sister met my question with loud, stunned silence before breaking into laughing when they realized I was serious.
When a chestnut sire is bred to a chestnut dam (red to red), the result is invariably red (chestnut).
When it comes to coloring, it is normally safe to have a foal that is similar to one of its parents, especially in the case of mixtures (bay) and dilutions (dun, buckskin, grulla).
This page does not cover horse breeding in terms of coat colors other than red/chestnut(brown), black (bay), and of course, grey.
Remember that regardless of the horse’s basic color or other genetic modifiers, the genetic modifier that causes it to grey will always be dominant over the others.
If you notice a few white hairs on the horse’s eyelids, this is usually the first clue that he or she is going to become grey (not eyelashes).
An individual horse (sire or mother) who possesses a grey modifier will be genetically ‘wired’ to sometimes produce grey foals and/or to produce grey foals on a regular basis.
However, I don’t think your characters would understand the meaning of these phrases, but they would understand that some gray stock will always yield grey.
It is common for the barrel (body) and neck to lighten first, followed by the legs and head, and last the mane and tail.
Here’s an example of how knowledge of the grey color progression may be applied in a fictional story’s description.
It would be deeper grey for the young horse and pure white for the old horse.
Due to the large number of links showing the same horse at various ages, they have not been classified by chronological age.
In nature, horses’ colors can vary greatly, and if you are not planning on comparing the horse’s color to itself at different stages of its life, it is safe to choose a picture from any of the links below to describe your horse, provided that you stay within the general guidelines of a “young horse,” “a mature horse,” or a “aged horse.” HADEED- by clicking on the horse’s name, a new window will open with his photo gallery.
- QADIFAN Hadeed is a senior grey stallion who is half-brother to Yasmeen and a younger half-brother to Yasmeen.
- Qadifan is around 5 years old in the second through fourth photographs, and approximately 11 years old in the remaining photographs.
- This is the age at which the fully trained war horses that would be ridden into combat would most likely be.
- Qadifan was a senior horse who had received only rudimentary training when he came to me.
- Once the necessary training had been completed, the partial absence of eyesight was no longer a problem.
- YASMEEN Pictures of Yasmeen taken at the age of sixteen show that she is nearly totally white, with barely a tinge of grey remaining in her mane and tail, as can be seen in the photographs below.
- This mare has a black base, but we believe she is homozygous for grey due to the fact that all of her foals have turned grey so far.
Grey horses are distinguished by their white coats and black skin.
A horse’s pink skin will only be visible under certain portions of the body, such as the spots (star or blaze) on their cheeks and the’socks’ on their legs.
Suppose your characters need to distinguish between two identical grey horses in the event of a disagreement or possibly mistaken identification.
GWAIHIR The link above has images of a grey horse with a chestnut base from birth to age four, taken during a four-year period.
We know he is heterozygous for grey for two reasons: first, he has a recessive gene for grey.
Because of this, not all of his foals will go grey as they grow older.
A mixture of white hairs are developing in various locations across his coat as a 2-year-old, some of which are as huge as a silver dollar in size.
He is silver-grey in color as a 3-4 year old, with some prominent white markings on his body.
Even while the black marks on his face in the ‘tongue’ shot will fade with time, the enormous pure white blotch will remain, except for when the rest of his face is bleached white to match it, which will happen eventually.
Also, observe that his mane and tail are still black as a 4-year-old, with the tip of his tail being black and the bottom being grey and white.
This page depicts her development from birth to four years old.
From photos taken a few days ago to more recent ones, you can see the progression of greying.
The pink snip on her muzzle demonstrates the difference in skin tone between the grey and white areas.
However, you can notice how significantly the white on his legs has changed since he was born.
CULINA, SAWANNAH FIONE SAWANNAH FIONE A chestnut mare with patches of tan, white, and roan as well as black, Sawant toh is a beautiful horse.
However, she does not have any pink skin beneath the blaze on her face or the sock on her leg, only pink skin under the body spots.
Fione is also a chestnut with black spots, like her mother.
The color of the skin does not vary with time, in contrast to the color of the hair.
Every year, when she develops and then loses her winter coat, she undergoes a color shift.
Her previous hair was very light brown.
She appears black throughout the most of the year, but by the end of the summer, she has faded to a dark smutty brown, with just her head, legs, hips, and shoulders remaining in their original black color.
To put it another way, a black mare with a genetic modification that only allows for the presence of black on the ‘points’ and leaves the rest of her red.
Aside from the striping on her legs, Witness also has a back strip with hip pads and shoulder pads as well as striping on her shoulders.
ELROS While he was still in his baby coat, Elros’s hue gradually faded to seem bay, and as he shed his baby coat, it became clear that he would eventually grow to black.
In his case, he was shedding his red hair and growing black hair at the same time.
Typically, a foal that is born black will eventually turn grey, and a horse that will mature to true black will be born a murky grey or a dark brown in color.
Even if the earliest of these white hairs may be present before birth, the majority of them appear within the first few weeks of life.
The coat of a horse that has spent a significant amount of time working outside can often appear to be ‘washed out’ in color.
Observations on the color of the hoof Hooves can be black, white (cream/light brown), or striped in various patterns and colors. Typically, if a horse wears a white sock or stocking on one leg, the foot on that leg will be light as well.

Horse of a Different Color
|Horse of a Different Color|
During the openingEmerald Cityscenes of the 1939MGMfilmThe Wizard of Oz, a horse named The Horse of a Different Color pulled the carriage drawn by another horse. The Cabbie (Frank Morgan) was in charge of driving the carriage pulled by it. Its hue would alternate on a regular basis, hence the name. In order to give the illusion of an animal that changes color from moment to moment, four individual horses were employed; the producers determined that several color changes on a single horse would take too much time.
When they were between takes, they couldn’t lick the colored powder off their faces because it was too tempting.
As a result, the scenes involving the horses were cast as quickly as possible.
It also had something to say. As soon as Langley got his hands on it, he gathered his friends, who joined him in rescuing Dorothy from theWicked Witch of the West and her Winged Monkeys; a story element that did not make it into the finished film.
A replica of the carriage carried by the Horse of a Different Color seen in the 1939 film was initially built for President Abraham Lincoln and presented to him as a gift during the American Civil War. It has a handwritten notation on the back of the frame that reads, “A. Lincoln, June 8, 1863.” Before it became a part of the collection at The Judy Garland Museum, it had appeared in approximately 200 films before being acquired by the museum.
