Medina Spirit’s trainer, Bob Baffert, stated that the horse will be entered in the Preakness Stakes shortly after the Derby. It was then revealed that Medina Spirit had tested positive for forbetamethasone, a corticosteroid, during the Derby. The horse is now in danger of being disqualified if the split sample reveals that the positive test was accurate. A deal was reached with Pimlico to allow Medina Spirit to compete in the Preakness on the condition that he submit to blood tests, monitoring, and a review of his medical records prior to the race; criteria that Medina Spirit met with flying colors.

  1. Also ruled out of the Preakness was Essential Quality, who had been the pre-race favorite before finishing fourth in the Derby on Saturday.
  2. Midnight Bourbon was predicted to be the third betting favorite after finishing sixth in the Derby, second in the Louisiana Derby, and winning the Lecomte Stakes.
  3. The post-position draw was place on May 11, according to the schedule.
  4. Midnight Bourbon and Medina Spirit were the co-favorites in the betting at 5-2 apiece at the time of the post.

Who should I pick to win the Preakness?

Check out the video below to hear expert Preakness choices and predictions from Sean Zerillo of the Action Network and Mike Conti of Fox Sports: It is expected that the Preakness in 2021 will be marred by controversy, since Medina Spirit will be one of the ten candidates to compete in the race at Pimlico. When it was announced last week that the Kentucky Derby champion had tested positive for a corticosteroid following his triumph, the story made headlines across the world. The Bob Baffert-trained horse will be subjected to intense scrutiny, and he has undergone further testing in the lead-up to the event.

  • In a statement to PaulickReport.com, assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes stated that the horse is well rested and that his performance at Churchill Downs a fortnight ago would not be a hindrance: “It was insignificant to him.
  • Throughout our whole stay, he has appeared to be in good health and joyful.
  • We’ve got some pleasant weather, which has been quite beneficial.
  • Concert Tour is another competitor who has been trained by Baffert, and she has won a pair of graded stakes races without passing any drug tests in the process.
  • He finished third in the Arkansas Derby, snapping a string of three consecutive victories to begin his career.
  • He hasn’t been seen or heard from since, presumably taking more than a month off before the Preakness.
  • The horse made a late charge in the Kentucky Derby, coming from behind to finish sixth, but eventually fell short of closing the deficit.
  • Asmussen feels Midnight Bourbon will have an edge this evening because of the short turnaround time between games.
  • Coming into the Derby, Midnight Bourbon had a strong track record of consistency.

Almost any of the ten contenders may finish up with a blanket of black-eyed Susans draped over their shoulders, but the three favorites stand out as being a cut above the rest.

Preakness Stakes

HomeSportsRecreation Other sports include the Preakness Stakes, a 13/16-mile (about 1,900-metre) flat race for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses run at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, every year in mid-May, and the Kentucky Derby. Fillies can carry 121 pounds (55 kg), whereas colts may carry 126 pounds (60 kg) (57 kg). The Preakness Stakes is the second (and shortest) event in the Triple Crown of American horse racing, which also includes the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes.

A horse race known as the Preakness was first held at Pimlico in 1873 and was named after the horse that won the Dinner Party Stakes at the track during the venue’s first year, 1870.

Despite a three-year absence, the event reappeared in 1894 and continued to be staged at the Gravesend track in Brooklyn until 1908, when it returned to Maryland for the first time since 1908 and became permanently based at Pimlico the following year.

Are you up for it?

Traditional Preakness festivities include the singing of “Maryland, My Maryland,” the official state song; the “painting of the colors,” in which a painter climbs a ladder to the top of the replica Old Clubhouse and paints the cupola’s jockey-and-horse weather vane with the colors of the winning team’s silks; and the draping of the winning horse with a blanket of “black-eyed Susans.” Yellow daisies are used in place of black-eyed Susans, which are Maryland’s state flower, because they do not bloom until June or July, and their centers are hand-painted with black lacquer to look like the flower.

The Preakness Stakes is sometimes referred to as “the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans,” in the same vein as the Kentucky Derby’s moniker, “the Run for the Roses.” The table below contains the names of the Preakness Stakes winners.

Preakness Stakes 2021

PostHorse/Best Beyer is a term used to describe a horse that has finished first in a race. Trainer/Jockey Odds for the Morning Line 1 D. Wayne Lukas Ricardo Santana Jr.30-1, Ricardo Santana Sr.30-1, Ricardo Santana Sr.30-1 Trainer:D. Wayne Lukas Ricardo Santana Jr. is the rider. Last Race – Track:Allowance, Churchill Downs, 1stOwner:Baker, Christina and Mack, William L. JP: Got an ideal setup when beating older allowance foes on Derby undercard, but this is a much tougher assignment. MM: Legendary trainer always glad to be here, but this colt really seems up against it on massive class jump.

  1. MM: Needing an up-front meltdown to produce best results; we’ve seen Derby bounce-backs like him contend before.
  2. Never been worse than 2nd, and no one here has finished in front of him.
  3. 4 Chad Brown Javier Castellano 10-1Trainer:Chad Brown Jockey:Javier Castellano Last Race – Track:Wood Memorial, Aqueduct, 3rdOwner:Klaravich Stables, Inc.
  4. MM: Even Chad is somewhat skeptical about his ability to get the distance, but yes, he’s coming to this the right way.
  5. Last Race – Track:Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs, 6thOwner:Winchell Thoroughbreds, LLC JP: Had far from his best chance in Derby after losing position early, but made nice run from a bad spot.
  6. MM: Louisiana contingent repped pretty well in Derby, including him, and now Irad gets the call; big threat on best.
  7. Ran on well in Blue Grass despite disadvantageous race flow, gets more pace here.

7 Hideyuki Mori Joel Rosario 20-1 Trainer:Hideyuki Mori Jockey:Joel Rosario Last Race – Track:UAE Derby, Meydan, 6thOwner:Yuji Inaida Sire:Will Take Charge JP: Looks like he’s a cut below these, but have great respect for trainer, and Rosario rides back after UAE Derby.

8 Todd Pletcher Luis Saez15-1 Trainer:Todd Pletcher Jockey:Luis Saez Last Race – Track:Allowance, Keeneland, 1stOwner:Whisper Hill Farm, LLC JP: Benefited from hot pace in Lexington, ran on well to earn career-best fig.

MM: Late bloomer looks to fill one of the few vacancies on HOF-elect trainer’s resume with a Preakness victory.

JP: Disappointing effort as Wood favorite.

Hard to read.

10 Bob Baffert Mike Smith 5-2 Trainer:Bob Baffert Jockey:Mike Smith Last Race – Track:Arkansas Derby, Oaklawn, 3rd Owner:Gary and Mary West JP: Disappointing effort in Ark.

Derby caused him to bypass Ky. Derby and point for this. Huge threat if he bounces back. MM: The “other” Baffert has a lot going for him if in fact he brings his “A” game; right kind of trip puts him right there.

What time does the Preakness Stakes start? What TV channel is it on?

BALTIMORE (AP) – In comparison to the Kentucky Derby, the second leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown is not as well-attended as the first. In fact, if you’re going to a Preakness party, you should raise your hand. Yes, I believe so. However, there is so much off-the-track drama this year that it may attract even more intrigue than usual. All of which raises the question of when time the Preakness Stakes will take place. Our first stop will be in Los Angeles, where the sun is at its regular mid-afternoon position of 3:47 p.m.

  • in the Mountain time zone, 5:47 pm in Chicago, and 6:47 pm in Baltimore, if you are eating crab cakes at a crab cake stand.
  • in Los Angeles.
  • Pacific time on Saturday.
  • At Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, there are several traditions that are similar to those of the Kentucky Derby.
  • The Derby is adorned with a blanket of roses, but the Preakness is adorned with a blanket of Black-Eyed Susans, which also happens to be the state flower of Maryland.
  • As a result, the race is 1 3/16 miles long.
  • Despite the fact that it is not considered a performance enhancer, it is nonetheless forbidden on the day a horse races.

One more enticing nugget for bettors and sports lovers alike ahead of Saturday’s event, which will feature 10 horses and jockeys — including prohibitive morning-line favorite Medina Spirit (9/5 odds) — and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports.

Analysis

The Preakness Stakes, the middle jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown, will be held on the third Saturday in May at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course, as it has done for the past many years. This year’s race, on the other hand, will be everything from routine. So, with the findings of the second sample perhaps not being available for many weeks, Medina Spirit is preparing to compete in the Preakness against a couple Derby horses and a slew of new shooters—although trainer Bob Baffert has stated that he would not attend the event.

  • On NBC, the show will air on Saturday at 6:50 pm Eastern.
  • 1 in the world (30-1) D.
  • Ricardo Santana Jr.
  • Lukas, a six-time Preakness champion, opted to go for a seventh victory with this son of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, who won the Triple Crown in 2015.
  • In addition, an allowance victory on May 1 against a soft field proved underwhelming.
  • David Cohen is the rider.
  • With no victories in his first three runs this year, the horse has had a top Brisnet speed number of 91 in the Kentucky Derby, which is seven points lower than his best juvenile performance.

Medina Spirit is ranked third (9-5) Bob Baffert is the trainer.

Medina Spirit had a great trip to the Derby on Saturday.

He was much slower than previous Kentucky Derby winners towards the end of the race, earning a final speed number of 101.

No.

Javier Castellano is the rider.

However, it is possible that a mile is his optimal distance, which would make sense given the fact that the descendants of his father, More Than Ready, are noted for their speed over shorter distances rather than over longer ones.

5 Midnight Bourbon (5-1).

is the rider.

In the Preakness, he should be back in the early lead to help set the pace once again.

Michael McCarthy is the trainer for No.

Flavien Prat is the rider.

However, his connections decided to aim him to this event instead.

In the past, he has frequently rewarded bettors when he has transported his horses to a race from another track or location, winning 31 of 118 races in this manner and earning a 19-cent return on every $2 win wager made.

Hideyuki Mori is the trainer for Go de Ina (20-1).

This year’s Grade II UAE Derby saw the Japanese colt struggle and finish sixth, 10 lengths behind the winner.

Todd Pletcher is the trainer for No.

Luis Saez is the rider.

Although he had a strong showing in the Lexington, it was over a muddy surface, so there is some concern about his ability to compete as well on a fast track.

9 Taking Risks (15-1)Trainer: Chad Brown No.

Risk Taking was victorious by four lengths in the Grade III Withers Stakes after starting from the rear of the field, but he was unable to maintain his momentum when finishing seventh in the Grade II Wood Memorial a few weeks later, effectively eliminating him from consideration for the Kentucky Derby.

It’s still unclear to me exactly what transpired in the Wood.

“If I can get a race like I did a few of weeks ago, it’s worth a try.” “The risk-reward ratio is in our favor, so we should give it a shot.” Tour de Concerts No.

Mike Smith is the rider.

The performance of Concert Tour in the Arkansas Derby on April 10 was deserving of admiration. With a career-best pace figure (time to three-quarters pole, adjusted for the track), he appears to be in perfect position for a career-best performance on Saturday, according to his coach.
