Belmont Stakes 2022

As the oldest of the three American classic races, called as the “Test of the Champion,” the Belmont Stakes is generally the last and longest leg of the Triple Crown. It is also the most prestigious. The event is generally held in early June, five weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks after the Preakness Stakes in Maryland, and it serves to finish off the long and arduous classics season in the United States. The fact that it is the last leg of the Triple Crown has left vivid memories, such as Secretariat’s spectacular performance in 1973, when he became the first horse in a quarter-century to sweep the series.

  • After ending an even longer Triple Crown drought in 2015, American Pharoah stunned the crowds at Belmont Park by becoming the first horse to win the series in 37 years, he wowed the crowds once more in 2016.
  • Founded in 1867, the Belmont Stakes was held for the first time in Jerome Park in the Bronx, which was constructed by stock market gambler Leonard Jerome and sponsored by August Belmont Sr., after whom the event was called.

  • Since 1926, the Belmont has been raced at 1 1/2 miles, or one complete lap on the large oval known as “Big Sandy,” with the distance varying slightly.

Prior to 1926, the race had been held at four different distances, the longest of which was 1 1/8 miles in 1893 and 1894 in Morris Park in New York City. It was also run at several distances throughout its early existence, including 1 3/8 mile, 1 1/4 mile, and 1 5/8 mile.

Rombauer will be entering the race after a three-week layoff, which might play a significant role in determining the outcome of the Belmont Stakes on April 14. Rombauer, on the other hand, will have a different jockey this time around, as Flavien Prat will be riding Hot Rod Charlie.

Essential Quality

Essential Quality will train the day before the 153rd running of the Belmont Stakes horse race, which will take place on Friday, June 4, 2021, in Elmont, New York, USA. Essential Quality defeated Rombauer to win the Blue Grass Stakes at Belmont Park in April. While finishing fourth at Churchill Downs, Essential Quality was a disappointing finish for the team from New York.

Rock Your World

Rock Your World prepares for the 153rd running of the Belmont Stakes horse race, which will take place on Thursday, June 3, 2021, in Elmont, New York. Photo courtesy of AP photographer Seth Wenig. After being eliminated at the start of the Kentucky Derby while wedged between two horses from post position 15 in a field of 19, Rock Your World finished in 17th place, a disappointing finish for him. Rock Your World is expected to do substantially better at the Belmont Stakes, despite the fact that the field will be significantly smaller, with only eight horses competing in the race.

A Smaller Field

A smaller field than typical will compete in the Belmont Stakes with only eight horses entered, as opposed to the Kentucky Derby, which included 19 horses. According to Dick Jerardi, an award-winning sportswriter, a couple of horses were originally scheduled to compete, but their owners opted to withdraw their consent at the last minute, while another horse was forced to withdraw due to a medical condition. Although a smaller field may make the race more competitive, it may also allow odd favorites to have a higher chance of winning.

A Change In Jockey

Rombauer was the winner of the Preakness Stakes, and Flavien Prat was the jockey. However, there will be a change for the Belmont Stakes, as Prat will be riding Hot Rod Charlie instead of Rombauer. The Hot Rod Charlie team had a commitment from Prat prior to the Kentucky Derby, according to Jerardi, who stated that Prat had pledged to riding their horse in the next Triple Crown race that Hot Rod Charlie competed in.

How Is the Belmont Stakes Celebrated?

The Belmont Stakes, which takes place on May 4th and is the oldest and longest race in the Triple Crown at 2.41 kilometers (1.5 miles), is one of the most viewed live sporting events in the United States. It is sometimes referred to as ‘The Test of the Champion’ due to the length of the competition. The race attracts well-dressed guests, who usually toast the occasion with a glass of the Belmont Jewel, the race’s official cocktail, which is served after the race.

Not the First Official Drink

In previous years, the Belmont Jewel, which is produced by blending bourbon with lemonade and pomegranate juice, was not officially designated as the official drink of the Stakes. The White Carnation, the original cocktail, was discontinued in 1997 and replaced with the Belmont Breeze. Neither beverage received unanimous approval from the panel of judges. This caused the Jewel to be introduced in 2011 by the event’s organizers.

Run for the Carnations

The winner of the race receives a blanket made up of over 500 white flowers that have been meticulously sewn to green velvet by hand by the event organizers. Colombian flowers are used in this arrangement.

A Silver Trophy

Additionally, the winner receives the August Belmont Trophy, which is a lavish and thick blanket of carnations covering the winner’s bed. A silver cup, designed by American jewelry designer George Paulding Farnham and manufactured by New York jewelers Tiffany & Co., is the subject of this article. The trophy, which was given to the Stakes by the Belmont Family, the founders of Belmont Park, became the official reward of the race in 1926 after being donated by the family. The winner will be able to keep the trophy for one year, till the next race day is held.

Official Song

The official music of the event has varied throughout the years, much like the official drink has changed over the years. This song, written by Vaudeville actor and singer Charles B. Lawlor in 1894, became the first official song of the marathon. It was titled The Sidewalks of New York. James W. Blake wrote the song’s lyrics, which you may read here. In 1996, the theme music from the Martin Scorsese film New York, New York was substituted for the original.

The official song of the Belmont Stakes was Jay-Z’sEmpire State of Mind in 2010, but in 2011, the organizers moved back to the theme music from the film New York, New York, which had been used in the previous year.

As opposed to a colt and filly, which are both young male horses, the term “gelding” refers to the castration of a mane and tail on an adult male horse.

History of the Belmont Stakes

The Belmont Stakes is one of the oldest Grade I races in the United States, having been run since 1875. The event and the course are named after August Belmont Sr., an American politician, diplomat, and horse breeder who was also a successful businessman. He was in charge of raising the necessary funds for the construction of the Jerome Park Racetrack.

Morris Park, a mile and three-eighths track located a few miles east of what is now Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, was chosen as the site for the Belmont in 1890, when it was relocated from Jerome Park. Until the creation of Belmont Park in 1905, the Belmont was held at Morris Park in New York City. Here’s something you probably didn’t know about Derby or Preakness history. When Grey Lag won the Belmont Stakes in 1921, it marked the first time that the race had been raced in the traditional counter-clockwise form of American fashion.

Until that point, the horses were driven directly from paddock to post on the field.

In the years 1867 to 1873, the race was 1 5/8 miles long; in the years 1874 to 1889, it was 1 1/2 miles long; from 1890 to 1892, and in 1895, it was 1 1/4 miles long; in the years 1896 to 1925, it was 1 5/8 miles long; and in the years 1925 to present, it has been 1 1/2 miles long.

Champion Sires

A total of eleven Belmont Stakes winners have sired at least oneother Belmont winner. Man o’ War is the most successful sire of the Belmont Stakes. Besides winning the race himself in 1920, three of his subsequent sires also won the race: AmericanFlag in 1925, Crusader in 1926, and War Admiral in 1937, who went on to win the Triple Crown. Commando won the 1901 running, then sired Peter Pan, the 1907 champ and theColin, the 1908 winner. 1930 champion Gallant Fox sired both Omaha (1935) and Granville (1936).

Count Fleet won the 1943 edition, and then sired back-to-back Belmont winnerswith Counterpoint (1951) and One Count (1952).

1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew sired a Call To The Derby Post favorite inSwale, who won both the Derby and the Belmont in 1984, as well as A.P.

1999 Belmont winner Lemon Drop Kid is also a descendantof the Slew.

The Finn of 1915 siredZev (1923); Sword Dancer of 1959 sired Damascus (1967); last but not least,Triple Crown winner Secretariat of 1973 sired Risen Star, the 1988 winner.

2021 Belmont Stakes: Post time, odds, TV and live stream info, how to watch race at Belmont Park

  • The post time for the 2021 Belmont Stakes is 6:49 p.m. ET, and the event will be broadcast live on NBC and NBC Sports Network. Essential Quality is the pre-race favorite for Saturday’s race
  • Nonetheless,

The 153rd Belmont Stakes takes place in the midst of a highly charged and interesting Triple Crown season. The winner of the Preakness, Rombauer, will attempt to win his second consecutive Triple Crown race on Saturday, but the winner of the Kentucky Derby, Medina Spirit, and his trainer, Bob Baffert, will not compete. Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer cruised past favorites Medina Spirit and Midnight Bourbon at Pimlico Race Course on May 15 to claim the 146th Preakness Stakes. Medina Spirit failed a drug test immediately following the Derby, and a second test on Wednesday revealed that the horse had been exposed to betamethasone, a corticosteroid, during the race.

The New York Racing Association, which oversees the Belmont Stakes, has barred Baffert from participating in the race indefinitely and has barred him from entering any horses in the race.

This year’s Belmont field includes five horses who raced in the Derby and are returning for the race.

With Overtook, trained by Todd Pletcher, being the only horse in the Belmont field that has not before raced in a Triple Crown event, it is a good bet that he will win the race.

Belmont Stakes

The Belmont Stakes is the oldest and longest of the three classic horse races (together with the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes) that make up the Triple Crown of American horse racing (along with the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes). The Belmont Stakes was first held in 1867 and was named after August Belmont, a businessman, diplomat, and sportsman who lived during that time period. Throughout its history, it has been run on a variety of distances and tracks. But it’s been hosted in Belmont Park, just outside of New York City, since 1905, and the course has been 1.5 miles (approximately 2,400 metres) in length since 1926, when it was first introduced.

The Belmont Stakes has earned the nickname “Test of the Champion” among horse-racing industry insiders.
