An investigation into a doping controversy involving Medina Spirit, the winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby, has overshadowed the return of the Preakness Stakes to its traditional slot on the racing schedule. Medina Spirit will be permitted to compete Saturday afternoon after failing a drug test following the colt’s Derby triumph earlier this month. It’s uncertain what effect the dispute will have on television ratings in the short term.
However, with Medina Spirit as the favorite, NBC faces the risk of having a shadow cast over both the Belmont Stakes and the Triple Crown races on the same day.
