At Churchill Downs on Saturday, Nyquist won the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby, holding pace with the early leader, Danzig Candy, into the far turn before putting on a show in the last quarter mile to eventually grab the lead as the other horse faded. Gun Runner initially gained the lead from Danzig Candy, then Exaggerator put up a strong effort down the line to take the victory. The 7th of May, 2016 LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KYW Newsradio) – The racing world was left wondering if there was a worthy successor to American Pharoah, who won the Triple Crown last year in convincing fashion. Then there’s Nyquist. In the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, the bay colt with no distinguishing markings triumphed by 14 lengths, improving to 8-0 in his career and becoming the fourth consecutive favorite to win the race. Nyquist finished 14 miles in 2:01.31 under the guidance of Mario Gutierrez and fought off a hard-charging Exaggerator till the finish line.

When Nyquist was the 2-1 favorite in the whole field of 20 horses, he earned $6.60, $4.80, and $3.60, respectively.

There couldn’t possibly be anything left in the tank after that, could there?

O’Neill and his brother and consigliere, Dennis, as well as Nyquist’s rider, Mario Gutierrez, and, most importantly, the colt’s owner, J.
The barn was bustling with activity — imagine the Google campus, but with matted bed head instead of skinny jeans and mounds of excrement in place of beanbag seats instead of beanbags.
That was the answer from a team that had been here and done it before, four years earlier with a long shot named I’ll Have Another, and knew what they were doing.
There was no hiding for the horses in the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.

The trainer explains, “He’s the type of horse that always has something left over for whatever comes his way late.” Bettors weren’t shocked by the outcome: Nyquist was a strong favorite, paying $6.60 for a $2 wager on the Swedish champion.

He earned $1.24 million with his colt’s victory, bringing his total earnings to more over $3 million for his career.

Reddam and O’Neill confronted the hypothetical head-on and conducted themselves as though it were not only a possibility, but also their strategy.

He’s the sort of athlete that works out in the gym every day and goes to bed at a reasonable hour each night.

O’Neill is also well aware that he will require a great deal of luck as well as a dash of magic in order to negotiate those infamous shoals.

After that, there couldn’t possibly be any more fuel in the tank.
