Horse Cave
Horse Cave is a small town with a population of 2,250 people in the southwestern side of Hart County. The town is built around a cave, which is also the source of the town’s name and water supply. This oasis of water, cool air, and shelter was a welcome sight. The origin of the name is not known for definite. A number of options have been offered. One possible explanation is because the word “horse” was widely used in the 18th and 19th centuries to refer to something extremely huge, such as horse-laugh, horse chestnut, and other such items.
Major Albert Anderson bought the whole parcel of property (535 acres) that is today known as Horse Cave in 1850.
Anderson is credited with the development of the small, non-connecting streets.

History
The village was founded in the 1840s by Major Albert Anderson and his family. In 1858, a landowner gave property for aLouisville and Nashville Railroadstation with the condition that it be named after Horse Cave, which was close at the time. This rapidly growing settlement was served by a post office that was built in 1860, and the city was legally established by the state parliament in 1864. The cave, after which the city is called, is located on the south side of Main Street on the west side of the street.
Some believe that Native Americans or outlaws hid horses in the cave; others believe that an early carriage lost a horse when it fell into the opening by accident; a third theory involves the 19th-century use of the word “horse” as slang for anything large or massive, which is related to a similar use of the Swedish word hoss.
- During World War I, the cave’s entrance was home to the only air-conditioned tennis courts in the world, which were built at the entrance.
- In the 1960s, the odor was so severe that passersby preferred to move to the opposite side of Main Street rather than go near the entrance, and birds would occasionally fall from the sky as a result.
- After changing its name to “Caverna” in 1869, the community was forced to rethink and reinstate the name “Horse Cave” in 1879, after being unable to change the name of the train station where the town was located.
- The majority of the money came from the tobacco warehouses and distribution centers.

The southern border of Cave City is defined by the Barren Countyline and the border with Cave City. The primary route through Horse Cave is U.S. Route 31W (Dixie Street), which leads north 8 miles (13 kilometers) to Munfordville and southwest through Cave City 10 miles (16 kilometers) to Park City, which is at the entrance to Mammoth Cave National Park.
I-65 is 78 miles (126 km) north of Horse Cave and 97 miles (156 km) southwest of Horse Cave.

Lieutenant-Colonel Albert Anderson founded the town in the 1840s. In 1858, the landowner agreed to grant land for a L Nstation on the condition that it be called after Horse Cave, which was close. Because of the rapid growth of the settlement around the station, a post office was built in 1860 and the city was legally established by the state legislature in 1864. The cave, after which the city is called, is located on the south side of Main Street on the west side of the street. There are a variety of theories offered for its enigmatic moniker.

There are just about 100 people in the entire town. In this city, I was born and raised, and it’s a pleasant location to live despite the lack of employment options. Only one restaurant, which is McDonalds, and only a few factories in terms of manufacturing.
