Hay is for Horses

For horse owners, one of the most significant effects of weather extremes is the availability and/or quality of hay and pasture. Because hay or pasture constitutes the majority of a horse’s diet, any change in the nutritional value of the forage has an impact on the nutritional health of the horse. What method do you use to determine the nutritional value of your hay? No matter what kind of hay is being used, good quality hay will contain the following characteristics: A high leaf to stem ratio is one of these characteristics.

6) There are only a few seed heads (grasses) or flowers (alfalfa) Furthermore, the hay should be rather soft and supple to the touch.

While visual inspection of hay can offer an idea of its quality, laboratory examination is the most precise method of determining its nutritional worth (nutritive value).

If you give it at the same rate as more nutrient rich hay, your horses will lose weight.

  • For those who purchase hay in bulk for usage over a period of several months, having it tested as soon as it is received may be worth the effort and price.
  • If this is the case, you may wish to consult with your county agricultural extension agent or feed provider for instructions on how to properly collect and test hay samples.
  • Nevertheless, the weather conditions in place at the time the hay was ready to be harvested may have precluded harvesting at the appropriate time, or they may have resulted in the cut forage receiving a heavy dew or even a rain shower before being baled.
  • Although the field was appropriately fertilized, cutting the hay too late will dramatically diminish the nutritional content and digestibility of the hay, and moisture on cut grass before baling will drain nutrients from the plants.
  • Because so many horse owners are in the habit of providing a set amount of flakes each day, the weight of each flake is critical to understanding.
  • An average flake of alfalfa hay will typically be thinner than an average flake of grass hay, yet it will weigh 5–6 pounds.
  • To give an example, the weight of a flake of alfalfa harvested from different cuttings or suppliers can range from 2.5 to 8 pounds per flake.

Even experienced horse owners can be completely wrong when asked to estimate the weight of a flake by looking at it or holding it in their hand.

It is recommended that you use a fish scale, which can be obtained for $6–$7 in the sporting goods area of your local discount shop.

If the quality of your hay has deteriorated, you will need to either increase the amount of hay you give or reduce the amount of grain you feed to compensate.

As a result, horses consume less hay that is of lower quality since it takes longer for them to chew and digest.

When hay quality deteriorates, it is common to find yourself picking up uneaten hay from the ground.

If this occurs, you will need to adjust the amount of grain you are feeding your horses in order to prevent them from being dehydrated or losing condition. According to Karen E. Davison, Ph.D., the source material for this blog entry was given by Purina Mils Corporation in 2012.
