Essential Quality wins the Belmont Stakes

Defeating second-place Hot Rod Charlie and third-place Rombauer to win the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, Essential Quality claimed the victory. The jockey was Luis Saez, and the trainer was Brad Cox. Saez dedicated his victory to his brother Juan Saez, who died in a motorcycle accident in 2014, and to his family. In Saez’s words, “This was the race that I really wanted to win.” “Today is a historic day for us.” It was Cox’s first and only Triple Crown victory. In addition to Mandaloun, another horse he trains, Medina Spirit, finished second in the Kentucky Derby and has the potential to give Cox another Triple Crown victory given the controversy surrounding first-place finisher Medina Spirit.

  5. Following the confirmation of Medina Spirit’s positive drug test, Churchill Downs, the Derby’s home track, banned Baffert for two years on Wednesday, effective immediately.

The Preakness was won by bay colt Rombauer, and there was no hope of a single Triple Crown winner this year. Dennis Romero is an American actor and director. Dennis Romero is a breaking news correspondent for NBC News Digital and a member of the NBC News Digital team.

Belmont Stakes 2021 results: Favorite Essential Quality wins the Belmont, Hot Rod Charlie second

With a length-and-a-half victory over lengthy race leader Hot Rod Charlie in the final stretch, betting favorite Essential Quality captured the Belmont Stakes, the third jewel of the Triple Crown, on Saturday. Along with jockey Luis Saez, the victory marks the first time in the history of the Triple Crown for trainer Brad Cox. It was Hot Rod Charlie who got the race started by speeding out of the starting gate and into first place, holding on for an early lead that he maintained until the far turn.

During the early stages of the final stretch, it appeared like the race would be a neck-and-neck finish, but Essential Quality’s blistering speed proved to be too much for Hot Rod Charlie to manage.

According to him, he did it for his family, notably his younger brother, who died in 2014 as a consequence of brain damage sustained while participating in horse racing in the United Kingdom.

The horse Mandaloun finished second behind Medina Spirit in the Run for the Roses, which disappointed the horse’s trainer, who was born in Louisville and hoped to have a local triumph.

Melissa Hoppert, our correspondent for the Belmont Stakes, gives you the action from Belmont Park, where thousands of fans are preparing for the last leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday, April 14. Saturday’s Run for the Roses race, which included a joyful mood and a victory by the horse that was expected to outperform them all, nearly gave the impression that everything was back to normal in the sport. If only it were that simple. ImageCredit. Submitted by Hiroko Masuike for The New York Times It has been a difficult spring season in the horse racing industry.

While a second sample was being analyzed, the horse was permitted to compete in the Preakness.

Following the Preakness, the New York Racing Association announced that Baffert, a two-time Triple Crown winner and the most well-known figure in the sport, would be suspended from training or racing horses at any New York racetrack until further notification.

Medina Spirit was the first winner to be disqualified due to a failed drug test.

As Churchill Downs’ chief executive stated on Wednesday, “reckless practices and substance violations that endanger the safety of our equine and human athletes or compromise the integrity of our sport are not acceptable, and as a company we must take measures to demonstrate that they will not be tolerated.” The scandal broke just as the horse racing industry was preparing to execute the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, which was enacted by Congress last year.

Belmont Stakes 2022

As the oldest of the three American classic races, called as the “Test of the Champion,” the Belmont Stakes is generally the last and longest leg of the Triple Crown. It is also the most prestigious. The event is generally held in early June, five weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks after the Preakness Stakes in Maryland, and it serves to finish off the long and arduous classics season in the United States. The fact that it is the last leg of the Triple Crown has left vivid memories, such as Secretariat’s spectacular performance in 1973, when he became the first horse in a quarter-century to sweep the series.

Secretariat wins Triple Crown in breathtaking style

The Kentucky Derby winner Secretariat becomes the first horse since Citation in 1948 to win the coveted Triple Crown of American horse racing, which includes the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. Secretariat, ridden by Ron Turcotte, completed the 1.5-mile race in 2 minutes and 24 seconds, setting a dirt-track record for that distance at the time. It was one of the greatest performances in racing history. Secretariat was born on March 30, 1970, at Meadow Stables in Doswell, Virginia, to a mother and a father.

  • He was a handsome chestnut colt that developed to over 16 hands in height and was the size of a three-year-old at the age of two.
  • He rallied from behind to finish fourth, marking the first and only occasion in his career that he finished a race without taking first or second.
  • His trainer, Lucien Laurin, promoted him to a higher level of competition in August, when he entered him in the Sanford Stakes at Saratoga, which he easily won by a three-length margin.
  • Secretariat appeared to be on his way to winning the Triple Crown after cruising to victory in his first two appearances in 1973.
  • He has since recovered.
  • With odds of 3 to 2, Secretariat raced away from the rest of the field to win the 1 1/4-mile race in a record time of 1 minute and 59 2/5th seconds.
  • Secretariat won the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, two weeks later, completing the Triple Crown by winning the second race of the Triple Crown.

A crowd of almost 100,000 people gathered at Belmont Park, outside New York City, on June 9, 1973 to watch if “Big Red” would become the first horse in 25 years to win the Triple Crown.

During the Belmont Stakes, Secretariat put up the best performance of his career, finishing the 1.5-mile race in a record time of 2 minutes and 24 seconds, knocking nearly three seconds off the previous track record established by Gallant Man in 1957.

Ron Turcotte, who rode Secretariat in all but three of his races, stated that he lost control of the horse at Belmont and that the horse decided to go down in history of his own own.

In November 1973, the “horse of the century” was retired and bred at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky, where he remains to this day.

After growing unwell, the Secretariat was put to death in 1989.

  2. The Kentucky Derby was won by Justify by an overwhelming margin.
  3. The fog was so dense that it was impossible to see the horses, and you could have questioned whether your television had a problem.
  4. With the triumph of American Pharoah and Victor Espinoza, we watched history being created at Churchill Downs.
  5. In contrast to the scorched and burned lawns of California, Victor and California Chrome came up dry and were unable to get the rain to fall, leaving fans scratching their heads in disbelief at what may have happened.
  6. When it comes to horses who were eligible to win the Triple Crown but did not succeed, there is a list of infamy that includes animals who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes but did not win the Belmont Stakes.
  7. What is the location of the Belmont Stakes racetrack?

When is the Belmont Stakes race scheduled to take place.

In part because of its distance and reputation as the race that may make or break a Triple Crown champion, the Belmont Stakes has served as the setting for some of the most memorable events in American horse racing history.

One and a half mile long primary course One thousand nine hundred seventy-seven feet separates the last turn on the main track from the finish.

Some Monumental Belmont Moments

Morris Park, a mile and three-eighths track located a few miles east of what is now Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, was chosen as the site for the Belmont in 1890, when it was relocated from Jerome Park. Until the creation of Belmont Park in 1905, the Belmont was held at Morris Park in New York City. Here’s something you probably didn’t know about Derby or Preakness history. When Grey Lag won the Belmont Stakes in 1921, it marked the first time that the race had been raced in the traditional counter-clockwise form of American fashion.

Until that point, the horses were driven directly from paddock to post on the field.

In the years 1867 to 1873, the race was 1 5/8 miles long; in the years 1874 to 1889, it was 1 1/2 miles long; from 1890 to 1892, and in 1895, it was 1 1/4 miles long; in the years 1896 to 1925, it was 1 5/8 miles long; and in the years 1925 to present, it has been 1 1/2 miles long.

Champion Sires

A total of eleven Belmont Stakes winners have sired at least one additional Belmont Stakes winner, bringing the overall number of Belmont winners to thirteen. Man o’ War is the most successful sire of the Belmont Stakes. Besides winning the race himself in 1920, three of his later sires also won the event: AmericanFlag in 1925, Crusader in 1926, and War Admiral in 1937, who went on to win the Triple Crown. Commando won the 1901 race and went on to father Peter Pan, who won the 1907 championship, and theColin, who won the 1908 championship.

  1. (1936).
  2. (1952).
  3. Indy, who won the Belmont in 1992, both of whom were considered Call To The Derby Post favorites.
  4. The following horses have each sired a Belmont winner, with one exception: Duke of Magenta of 1878 produced Eric in 1889; Spendthrift of 1879 sired Hastings in 1896; Hastings then followed his own example by siring Masterman, the winner of the Derby in 1902.

The Fastest Belmont Stakes Winners

Even if a horse wins the Belmont Stakes, completing the “Test of Champions” in less time than the other contenders elevates them to a different level of distinction. As I’ve stated previously when looking at the topBelmont Stakes winners of all time, this event is more than simply a 1 1/2-mile sprint, as we saw when looking at the topBelmont Stakes winners of all time. Even in years when there is no Triple CrownTM, the Belmont Stakes carries the weight of the whole Triple CrownTM on its shoulders.

Speed is still a critical factor in the Belmont Stakes, which is known for being a race determined by stamina.

It is not just about how quick you are, but also about how well you are able to sustain your speed over the duration of the competition. Not usually are the ones that charge out of the gate the first to cross the finish line that are the most successful.

Here are the 5 fastest Belmont Stakes winners of all time:

Time:2:26.56 As previously noted, the Belmont Stakes bears more than simply the weight of a single event when it comes to its significance. It was for this reason that jockey Gary Stevens was not totally happy after riding Point Given to victory in the Belmont Stakes in 2001. Point Given had finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby®, perhaps owing to a foot illness, and had won the Preakness Stakes prior to the event. Consequently, even if the triple was out of the question, Point Given still had a chance to win his second gem.

However, even as the tempo slowed, Point Given remained on the offensive, surging ahead of the rivals.

Stevens was left wondering what might have happened if Point Given had been at full strength in the Derby after such a convincing victory.

4. Risen Star, 1988

Time:2:26.50 Point Given wasn’t the only horse who wished for a second chance in the Kentucky Derby. A winner of the 1988 Kentucky Derby®, Risen Star also won the Preakness Stakes and posted the fourth fastest time ever at the Belmont Stakes, which was his first major victory in the United States. Risen Star, in a similar vein to Point Given, put forth his greatest performance at Belmont Park, defeating the rest of the field by 14 3/4 lengths in the process.

3. A.P. Indy, 1992

Time:2:26.13 A.P. Indy’s blood runs red when it comes to winning the Belmont Stakes. This horse was sired by 1977 Belmont winner Seattle Slew and went on to sire 2007 Belmont winner Rags to Riches, making him a member of the only three-generation family of Belmont winners in the history of the race. In 1992, A.P. Indy followed up his victory in the Belmont Stakes with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup, which helped him claim the title of American Horse of the Year for the second time in his career.

Indy is frequently cited as having matched for the second-fastest finish at Belmont, his official recorded time places him just behind the leader in the third position on the list.

2. Easy Goer, 1989

Time:2:26.00 Belmont Park was meant to be the location of Sunday Silence’s crowning achievement, but it ended up being the scene of his most humiliating defeat. Even though Sunday Silence arrived in New York with victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes already under his belt, fate had other plans for him. Easy Goer made his way onto the scene. This horse entered the Belmont Stakes with the knowledge that he has the ability to cause an upset; all he had to do was go out and do it.

1.Secretariat, 1973

Time:2:24.00 There are no indications that this record will be broken any time in the near future. Despite the fact that it had been 25 years since the previous horse to win the Triple Crown TM, Secretariat, who had already won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, arrived at Belmont Park on the verge of becoming a legend. However, what unfolded during the 1 1/2-mile race propelled him into the realm of immortality. While the first half of the race was conducted at a leisurely pace, Secretariat demonstrated the real character of a champion by extending their advantage to a vast margin as they reached the second half of the race.

The horse Secretariat not only established the record for the quickest time at Belmont Park, but he also set the American record for any mile-and-a-half length on dirt at any stage in his career.

Belmont Stakes

The Belmont Stakes is the oldest and longest of the three classic horse races (together with the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes) that make up the Triple Crown of American horse racing (along with the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes). The Belmont Stakes was first held in 1867 and was named after August Belmont, a businessman, diplomat, and sportsman who lived during that time period. Throughout its history, it has been run on a variety of distances and tracks. But it’s been hosted in Belmont Park, just outside of New York City, since 1905, and the course has been 1.5 miles (approximately 2,400 metres) in length since 1926, when it was first introduced.

The Belmont Stakes has earned the nickname “Test of the Champion” among horse-racing industry insiders.
