KHRC rejects complaint against wealthy Sheikh and his horse, Derby favorite Essential Quality

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The city of Louisville is preparing to host the World Cup. An official complaint against Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the owner of Kentucky Derby favorite Essential Quality, has been filed with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. The complaint asks that he be barred from any involvement with Kentucky horse racing until he can demonstrate that his daughter, who many believe is being held against her will, is safe and free. However, on Thursday, the KHRC published a brief statement denying the complaint, which read: “On April 28, 2021, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) received a complaint against licensee Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum.

Kentucky Human Rights Commission has found that the complaint does not identify a violation of KHRC standards after consulting with lawyers and following Kentucky statutes.” International human rights campaigners claim that Sheikh Mohammad is detaining his daughter, Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed al-Maktoum, after she attempted to flee Dubai against his desires, according to reports in the press.

  • In the letter, she expresses fear for her life, stating that this may be the last time she is able to communicate due to the conditions in which she is being held and her fear of her father.
  • In addition to Marcosson, the complaint was submitted by a team from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law.
  • His comments on the KHRC came before the commission published its decision late Thursday afternoon.
  • In addition, those rights should be exercised to prevent Sheikh Mohammed from participating in any way, which implies that any horses he owns or is linked with might also be barred from competing in Kentucky events, including the Derby.

Requests for comment were sent to his offices in Lexington and the United Arab Emirates, but were not answered. WAVE 3 News Now is broadcasting live. Watch whenever and wherever you want. (Source: WAVE 3 News) All rights reserved by 2021 WAVE 3 News. Copyright 2021 WAVE 3 News.

Racing Commission Asked to Ban Essential Quality, the Kentucky Derby Favorite

According to the Associated Press, a horse owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum may not make it out of the starting gate at this year’s Kentucky Derby because of repeated suspicions that the ruler of Dubai stole his own daughter, according to the ruler of Dubai. In a complaint received this week by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC), a group of human rights attorneys and students from the University of Louisville demanded that Essential Quality, Sheikh Mohammed’s horse, be barred from competing in the Kentucky Derby.

  • After attempting to depart Dubai by yacht in 2018, Sheikha Latifa bin Mohammed Al Maktoum stated last spring that she is being kept against her will and that she was detained by commandos in 2018.
  • In a lawsuit between Sheikh Mohammed and his second official wife, Princess Haya, for the custody of their two children, a judge determined that Sheikh Mohammed was culpable for both abductions last year.
  • In a field of 20 entrants, Essentially Quality, an unbeaten grey colt, is favored by oddsmakers 2-1 and has the best chance of winning the Kentucky Derby after 11 tries and millions of dollars invested by the sheikh.

  • In 2004, Princess Haya married Sheikh Mohammed, the son of the late King Hussein of Jordan.
  • Because of the country’s economic and historical ties with Dubai, the cases are particularly controversial in the United Kingdom.

He is acquainted with Queen Elizabeth II, who shares his passion for horses.

In spite of the fact that the sheikh is not expected to be among the few people in attendance, Churchill Downs spokesperson Darren Rogers believes the protest has little chance of succeeding.

There have been no horse racing offenses reported, and we are not aware of any other regulatory or governmental investigations underway in the United States “Rogers shared his thoughts.

Earlier this year, the United Nations Human Rights Office expressed alarm over Latifa’s treatment by the United Arab Emirates and requested proof that the princess was still alive.

Sheikha Latifa’s supporters have encouraged PresidentJoe Biden to exert pressure on Sheikh Mohammed in order to secure her release, claiming that Biden is one of the few international leaders with the authority to secure her release.

The dismissal of a class-action lawsuit filed in Florida has been upheld.

The trainer worked for the Godolphin stable.

Sheikh Mohammad started Godolphin in 1994 and is the owner of Darley, one of the industry’s largest breeding enterprises with farms in Kentucky, England, Ireland, and Australia.

Despite having won several of the world’s most renowned horse races, Godolphin has yet to claim victory in the Kentucky Derby.

Essential Quality, a Godolphin homebred Tapit colt, won his career debut in impressive fashion on the rescheduled Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve undercard, scoring by four lengths in a six-furlong race. In preparation for his next start, the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland on Oct.

  1. Essential Quality was placed in second through the backstretch while jockey Luis Saez pressed the pace, and the colt took over at will heading into the far turn and was never challenged again in a commanding 3 14-length victory.
  2. Essential Quality accelerated on cue and rolled past seven other horses to win by three-quarters of a length and establish himself as a leading contender for the Eclipse Award as the best 2-year-old male in the country.

  6. Highly Motivated, on the other hand, was prepared to fight and battled him to the finish line before succumbing late as Essential Quality won by a neck as the 1-2 favorite.
  7. After Medina Spirit, the first-place finisher, was disqualified by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission for testing positive for medication, he was promoted to third place nearly ten months after finishing third.

Reuters reports that on June 5, Defeating Hot Rod Charlie down the stretch to win the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, Essential Quality made up for his Kentucky Derby defeat by capping off a turbulent year for thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown in the United States of America. Essential Quality, the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby in May, finished fourth at Churchill Downs on Saturday, but jockey Luis Saez gave him a superb ride this time around. With Hot Rod Charlie setting the early scorching pace, the big gray attacked at the penultimate bend before battling neck-and-neck with the front-runner down the home stretch before pulling away for a length-and-a-half victory over the rest of the field.

Essential Quality, which is owned by Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, achieved its fifth victory in six career races with this victory. Rombauer, the winner of the Preakness Stakes, finished third. “Today is the day when history is made,” Saez declared. When it came to the Kentucky Derby, “we were so convinced that we were going to win that race; he was ready, but we got off to a little unlucky start,” says the trainer. “Today, the most important thing was to attempt to break clean; the remainder of the race, I was certain that he would accomplish it.” It was Rob Cox’s first Belmont Stakes and Triple Crown triumph, and he might wind up with two jewels of the Triple Crown if Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit is stripped of its victory by testing positive for the prohibited chemical betamethasone during the race.

  • Assuming Medina Spirit is disqualified, Mandaloun, the horse trained by Cox, will be proclaimed the Kentucky Derby victor.
  • Medina Spirits’ Hall of Fame trainer Baffert was also conspicuously absent, having been suspended for two years by Churchill Downs for his part in the positive test.
  • Despite the victory, the Belmont Stakes has been marred by controversy, with owner Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum coming under fire from human rights organizations over allegations that the ruler of Dubai arranged the disappearance of his own daughter.
  • Cox stayed out of the fray, although he did compliment the Sheikh on multiple occasions for his support and sponsorship of the team.

In Cox’s words, “Sheikh Mohammed has been a tremendous assistance to us over the last two years, and this organization is world-class.” “Obviously, we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for this horse and his assistance, so I just wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to him.”

Efforts to bar Derby favorite Essential Quality drawing eyes to plight of Dubai princess

  • Sam Marcosson is posing an improbable question. Three days before the Kentucky Derby, a legal professor from the University of Louisville filed a case in an attempt to prevent the much favored Essential Quality from competing in the race for the Roses. He is requesting that the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission prohibit the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, from participating in any activities associated with horse racing until his daughter, Princess Latifa, is rescued from what he claims is captivity in the United Arab Emirates. Marcosson’s plea was, as was to be expected, turned down on arrival. In addition, it was received by the KHRC too late for official consideration before Saturday’s race and asked for the type of action that a state agency would typically like to delegate to the United Nations. Furthermore, aside from the implications for the tense relationship between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, such a ban could jeopardize Sheikh Mohammed’s massive investment in Kentucky’s thoroughbred industry as well as the thousands of jobs that are dependent on his Godolphin racing empire, which is based in Dubai. Horse named after Breonna Taylor and owned by the family’s lawyer wins Kentucky Derby Week race (more information) Although racing regulators may wish to keep their distance from the family issues of a billionaire who enjoys lavish spending, it is difficult to remain indifferent to Marcosson’s initiative or to the United Nations’ call for “concrete proof” of Princess Latifa’s condition, which was issued just last week. One has to work hard to convince oneself that Sheikh Mohammed’s gold-plated chase of the largest race to evade him is a tale that is more important than the destiny and independence of his children. Someone, somewhere, has a responsibility to intervene for the benefit of a young woman’s well-being. If not the KHRC, then perhaps Joe Biden,” she says. KHRC executive director Marc Guilfoil said in a prepared statement that after consulting with counsel and following Kentucky laws, the commission found that the complaint did not define a violation of KHRC regulations. This much may be subject to interpretation, to be honest. A legislation cited by Marcosson grants the commission authority to regulate horse racing “in order to dispel any shadow of affiliation with the unwanted and to maintain the appearance as well as the actuality of perfect honesty and integrity of horse racing in the Commonwealth.” If a Kentuckian who was associated in the horse racing industry somehow.had done the things that Sheikh Mohammad is suspected of doing – kidnapping their own adult child and holding them hostage – do you think the horse racing commission would do nothing? Marcosson was the one who inquired. “I believe that they would. And even if they did, why should Sheikh Mohammed be exempt from the same laws that apply to any other Kentuckian?” The reason they aren’t willing to act is because of the power and position that Sheikh Mohammad possesses in the horse racing industry, and they should state that. They should state unequivocally that he receives preferential treatment because he is the owner of these stables. These breeding farms are owned by him. He’s just too crucial to be ignored. He’s too powerful to be stopped.” When Marcosson filed a similar complaint in 2019, the KHRC answered that his proof was insufficient since it was based on “press reports.” Marcosson appealed the decision. Following that ruling, the British High Court’s Andrew McFarlane determined that “there is no reason to doubt that it was indeed Latifa’s settled ambition to escape from Dubai,” that “she was plainly desperate to extricate herself from her family and prepared to undertake a dangerous mission in order to do so,” before she was captured by commandos who stormed an American-flagged yacht in international waters in 2018 and brought her back to Dubai. “I’m being held prisoner,” the princess declared in a video that went viral on YouTube. As well as that, this estate has been turned into a prison. All of the windows are securely closed. I’m unable to open any windows. I’ve been detained alone in solitary confinement with no access to medical assistance. “There will be no trial, no charge, nothing.” More: Attempting to dethrone the Kentucky Derby favorite What is the most important quality? Here are four horses that can do it all. It is difficult to believe the sheikh’s assurances that the princess is secure and well-cared for in the absence of independent proof of these statements. During the trial, McFarlane stated that Sheikh Mohammed had not been “open and honest with the court” and accepted as evidence that he had orchestrated the abduction of another daughter, Shamsa, in England in 2000 and her return to Dubai. McFarlane said the claims that the father ordered and arranged the kidnapping and rendition to Dubai of his daughters Shamsa and Latifa were “of a very high order of gravity.” “They may likely contain findings of activity that is contrary to the criminal law of England and Wales, international law, international maritime law, and globally acknowledged human rights principles, even if they are made on a civil basis.” At the very least, the evidence stands in sharp contrast to Sheikh Mohammed’s well-deserved reputation as a model of discipline on the racecourse. When asked about the Sheik’s ambition to win his first Derby after 11 tries, Godolphin USA President Jimmy Bell remarked last month, “He is very philosophical about these sorts of races and possibilities.” “(His perspective) is that, given enough time, patience will win out, and if something is meant to be, it will manifest itself in due course.” The good news is that there has never been a speck of pressure. The fact that he is so understanding and has such a positive attitude on things makes things a lot easier.” His greatest Derby finish to date is a fourth-place finish (Frosted, 2015). This year’s champion, Essential Quality, a 2-year-old champion trained by Louisville’s Brad Cox, is the Sheikh’s greatest hope. In a statement released Thursday, Cox added, “I hope to meet him someday.” “He’s been quite generous to us over the last few years, providing us with high-quality stuff, and we make every effort to perform for him in the afternoons when possible.” In addition, I’m delighted to be in this position.” More: The Kentucky Derby is fast approaching, and the Courier Journal’s sports crew has made their predictions. But when the pleasant trainer was challenged about efforts to prohibit Essential Quality from the Derby because of human rights concerns, the charming trainer became abrupt and defensive. “All I do is train the horses,” he explained. We Know Where the Sheikh’s Horse Is. But Where Is His Daughter?

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The city of Lexington, Kentucky, has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For over 40 years, the ruler of Dubai has lavished lavish sums of money on this region of central Kentucky. hundreds of acres of lush bluegrass with gently undulating hills marked by limestone and plank fences are the setting for this epicurean adventure. stallions and mares, which he intends to use to fill his farms with foals and yearlings obtained through sales ring sales. 4. In a letter sent to Dubai last week, a panel of United Nations human rights experts, including members of a panel that deals with forced disappearances and crimes against women, requested confirmation that Sheikha Latifa was still alive and demanded that she be released immediately.

The diplomatic embassies of the United Arab Emirates in New York and Dubai did not respond to calls for comment.

Sheikh Mohammed has been a frequent guest of the Queen at horse races in the past.

“His conduct is reprehensible,” said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch.

The United States’ response to the United Nations declaration has been subdued.

“We take seriously all reports of people being detained against their will, and we underline that freedom from arbitrary detention is a universal human right,” the statement said.

She was given over to Emirati security agents.

The BBC reported at the time that Robinson said Sheikha Latifa was mentally ill and getting adequate care from her family, only for Robinson to subsequently claim she had been “horribly deceived.” Here in Kentucky, where Sheikh Mohammed’s fortune is sown in the countryside, no one wants to talk about him other than the possibility that Essential Quality may ultimately provide him the blanket of roses.

  1. Sheikh Mo, as he is called in this country, is, after all, a one-man economic impact event.
  2. He comes at Blue Grass Airport by private jumbo aircraft for the Keeneland yearling sale, which takes place every September.
  3. And Sheikh Mo spends a lot of money — hundreds of millions of dollars so far — winning auctions and driving up the prices of horses that he doesn’t want to pay as much for.
  4. Despite repeated requests, Jimmy Bell, the president of Darley America, refuses to be interviewed about the sheikh or his business in the United States of America.

  • Sheikh Mohammed’s involvement in thoroughbred racing allowed him to blend one of his great passions with his aim to transform Dubai into the Singapore of the Middle East.
  • His horses have won more than 5,000 races while competing at the highest levels of racing across the world, including triumphs in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France, the Epsom Derby in England, and the Melbourne Cup in Australia.
  • Although the sheikh is expected to be at Churchill Downs to see Essential Quality attempt to win one of the few races in the world that has escaped him, it is improbable that he would attend.
  • He is, nevertheless, a regular at the Keeneland sale, where he mingles with riders dressed in jeans and accompanied by a small group of advisers.
  • It is through the use of Essential Quality that we can see how Sheikh Mohammed’s operations in this nation have progressed.
  • He was the 2-year-old champion last year and has gone undefeated in five races in America, earning more than $2.2 million in the process.
  • Associated Press photographer Michael Conroy Brad Cox, a Louisville native and the recipient of the 2020 Eclipse Award for greatest trainer, is responsible for the training of Essential Quality.
  • “I mean, as far as American racing is concerned, this is — in my opinion, this is the most important event there is,” Cox said via teleconference on Sunday.
  • And I’m aware that Sheikh Mohammed has been pursuing victory in the race for several years.” Cox, like the other people questioned for this article, did not mention abducted and imprisoned daughters, nor did he mention harassed and frightened wives.
  • It was a sophisticated enterprise that was clearly dealing with high-end bloodstock, including some of the greatest bloodlines in the world.

And it’s been an incredible privilege to train for such a vast worldwide enterprise and to be able to ride a horse such as this.” Lara Jakes contributed to this story.

Essential Quality Profile

Name Essential Quality
Born Apr 09, 2018
Age 3 years

Essential Quality was the favourite heading into the 2021 Kentucky Derby, but ultimately fell short by finishing fourth behind winner Medina Spirit, Mandaloun and Hot Rod Charlie.

Essential Quality is a three-year-old colt that is owned by Godolphin Stables, which is well-known for its thoroughbreds. He is trained by Brad H. Cox and was widely regarded as the favorite coming into the Kentucky Derby in 2021 after posting an undefeated record in the qualifying rounds. In the end, he had a difficult time getting going and finished fourth, behind Medina Spirit, Mandaloun, and Hot Rod Charlie, who all won their respective races. Despite this setback, Essential Quality was still able to collect $150,000 in compensation for his connections.

Sire: Tapit

Essential Quality is a son of Tapit, who in 2014 surpassed all other sires in North America to become the greatest sire in the world. Tapit won three of the six races he competed in that year, setting a new earnings record that he broke the next year and again the following year. In 2015, his stud price was $300,000, making him the most expensive horse in North America. Tapit’s previous harvests have produced five Breeders’ Cup winners and three Belmont Stakes winners, among other notable accomplishments.

  • Therefore, any foal sired by him on a mare who is not grey in color will be grey in color, which is exactly what happened with Essential Quality.
  • Tapit is regarded as a well-balanced racehorse with a physical appearance that is reminiscent of his Arabian forefathers and foremothers.
  • His three-year-old season was cut short due to shin injuries, but he rebounded to finish sixth in the G1 Florida Derby on March 13, 2004, his first start since.
  • Despite entering the Kentucky Derby as the second favorite at 5/1, he finished seventh in the race.

Dam: Delightful Quality

Essential Quality is the second foal of Delightful Quality and the dam’s first winner. She is the dam’s second foal and the dam’s first winner. Delightful Quality is a daughter of Elusive Quality and a half-sister to champion filly Folklore, who is also a daughter of Elusive Quality. According to the Delightful Quality family tree, the mare La Troienne was one of the most renowned and important Thoroughbred broodmares in the world during the first half of the twentieth century. Among the winners from La Troienne were 10 gold medalists and two Hall of Famers.

Elusive Quality was the most successful sire in North America in 2004, and he is the father of champions such as Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones.

His triumphs came on both artificial grass and natural dirt. As a five-year-old, Elusive Quality finished fourth in the Woodbine Mile and sixth in the Kelso Handicap to bring his career to a successful conclusion. His total profits came to $413,284 dollars.

Godolphin Stables

Godolphin Stables, the company that owns and breeds Essential Quality, is a thoroughbred racehorse owning, training, and breeding enterprise. Godolphin, which is based in the English town of Newmarket, is widely regarded as one of the most successful horse owners in the world. In addition to producing several top-level racehorses, they are widely considered as one of the greatest racing facilities in the whole world. A division of Godolphin Racing, the world’s largest flat racing organization, Godolphin Stables is owned and controlled by the company.

After being purchased by Godolphin Racing in April 1988, they were renamed under the direction of head trainer John Gosden.

Road to the Kentucky Derby

Essential Quality was the leading contender on the Road to the Kentucky Derby in 2021, a series of races leading up to the Kentucky Derby in which horses competed against one another. The top four finishers in each of the qualified events get qualification points, which they use to compete for positions on the standings board. Preparation races, which take place in March and April, are worth more points than regular races. Essential Quality was on the verge of qualifying for the Kentucky Derby after winning the Southwest Stakes on February 27.

He solidified his position at Churchill Downs by winning the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 3, earning him an additional 100 points for the Kentucky Derby.

Strong start for Essential Quality

When Essential Quality made his first start on September 5, 2020, it marked the beginning of the season for two-year-olds. At Churchill Downs, he competed in a six-furlong special weight race for the first time. During the race, the colt was positioned in the middle of the field as Copa established a quick early pace. However, after making it around the corner, he became trapped in traffic on the way to the finish line in the stretch of road. Initially, he raced to the outside of the field before pulling away to win by four lengths.

  1. The colt was the 2/1 favorite in a field of nine horses, which drew a lot of attention given his lack of prior racing experience.
  2. Essential Quality went on to win by three and a quarter lengths over Keepmeinmind.
  3. He was up against a field of 14, and he was the 7/2 second favorite, trailing only the unbeaten Jackie’s Warrior, who was also a candidate for the Kentucky Derby.
  4. After establishing touch with Keepmeinmind and settling into the center of the pack, Essential Quality suffered a setback.

  5. Earlier this year, Sheikha Latifa was apprehended by commandos after attempting to depart Dubai on a boat.

Last year, a judge in the United Kingdom found that Sheikh Mohammed was the mastermind behind both kidnappings. The sheikh had told the court that he was relieved to have located his “vulnerable” daughter Shamsa, who had gone away after her father went missing.

Wife fled out of fear

It was a matter between Sheikh Mohammed and his second official wife, Princess Haya, for the custody of their two children that the court was presiding over. She is the late King Hussein of Jordan’s daughter, and she married Sheikh Mohammed in 2004, after the death of her father. With her two children in tow, she departed Dubai in 2019 claiming she was afraid of her husband’s threatening behavior. Essential Quality

Essential Quality has maintained the level of brilliance that has propelled him to stardom over the years. Last year’s Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old male and TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1) winner comes to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) with a spotless résumé from his 3-year-old season. He has gained even more respect this year for his fortitude that is the hallmark of superior Thoroughbreds with victories in the Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets (G1), the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) at Saratoga, and half-length victory in the Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1) on Aug.

  • Prior to that, the gray colt demonstrates exceptional constancy and grittiness even in loss.
  • He was defeated barely a length for the triumph and probably ran better than others who finished ahead of him.
  • Trainer Brad Cox discovered Essential Quality’s extraordinary potential in one of his first timed sessions.
  • “He just kept going and going and you’re like, ‘Whoa, we did too much with him.’ Then he walks off the track like he did nothing.
  • He also is ruler of the emirate Dubai.
  • Cox grew up near Churchill Downs and began following racing as a youngster.

Race favourite Essential Quality rallies to win Belmont Stakes

NEW YORK (AP) – New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has resigned. Brad Cox stated that he was not sitting around waiting or worrying about whether or not Bob Baffert’s Kentucky Derby winner would be disqualified, which would give him his first victory in a Triple Crown event if the Kentucky Derby winner was disqualified. Essential Quality won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, ensuring that Cox would not have to wait another second to become the first trainer to win the Triple Crown in the same year.

  1. If the Baffert-trained Medina Spirit is disqualified for failing a postrace drug test, Cox may become the Kentucky Derby champion with Mandaloun.
  2. Although Essential Quality defeated Hot Rod Charlie by 1 1/4 lengths, Cox was able to enjoy himself on this occasion.
  3. “I believed that would be beneficial to our horse,” Cox explained.
  4. It cost $4.60 to win, $3 to place and $2.60 to show for Essential Quality, who was the 2-1 favorite at the start of the race.
  5. Despite the fact that it was a mile and a half round trip, Cox described the experience as exhilarating.
  6. I had a feeling it was going to be a tough fight down the road.” A bad trip cost Essential Quality the opportunity to place fourth in the Kentucky Derby as a favored runner in the race.
  7. “He has never ran a terrible race in his life, and I believe he demonstrated today that he has met the standard of a champion,” said Jimmy Bell, head of Godolphin Stable, which owns Essential Quality.

This is a wonderful credit to him, to be able to perform at this level as a 2-year-old and then come through these races as a 3-year-old with the mile-and-a-half classic.” Making his way through a backdoor to become the first Louisville-born trainer to win the Kentucky Derby would deny Cox the same joy of victory as he would have experienced had he gone through the traditional route to win the Belmont, which the rising star will likely remember as his first true triple crown win.

  • And Cox was forewarned of this.
  • He was able to truly display his endurance late in the game, thanks to Luis’s excellent work placing him in position to turn for home.
  • Maximum Security, on the other hand, was disqualified for interfering with the performance of other horses.
  • “This is my second home,” said Saez, who dedicated the race to the memory of his younger brother Juan, who died in a riding accident in 2014.
  • “This was the race that I had set out to win.” The triumph, however, comes with a cloud of suspicion hovering over Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who owns the Godolphin race horse.
  • Cox made it a point to mention Sheikh Mohammed shortly after the Belmont, despite the fact that he was just talking about his ownership and not the situation in Dubai.
  • “This is a tremendous organization, a world-class organization,” Cox added.
  • Churchill Downs banned Baffert for two years after a second sample from the Derby tested positive for betamethasone, which is illegal at any level on race day in Kentucky, Maryland, and New York.
  • Cox was perplexed as to why he was being repeatedly questioned about the impending Derby DQ.
  • After five weeks after the Derby and three weeks after the Preakness, this year’s Belmont Stakes returned to its traditional spot as the third leg of the Triple Crown.

The race was run at its traditional “test of the champion” distance, with fans yelling for their favorite horses at the top of the stretch.

Betting favorite Essential Quality wins Belmont

5th of June, 2021 NEW YORK CITY – While waiting to know if he’ll be given another from the Kentucky Derby, Brad Cox notched up his first Triple Crown triumph with Essential Quality’s romping victory in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. If the Bob Baffert-trained Medina Spirit is disqualified from the Kentucky Derby, Cox may be the Derby victor with Mandaloun. However, Cox was able to take pleasure in this race, as Essential Quality defeated Hot Rod Charlie by 114 lengths. In the last bend, Essential Quality overcame early leader Hot Rod Charlie, who had been leading the race for 112 miles.

  1. He received $4.60 for first place, $3 for second place, and $2.60 for third place.
  2. “On the inside, it appeared like the horse had a few strides left in him.
  3. In the Kentucky Derby, the defeated favorite Essential Quality, a stunning gray horse, finished fourth as the result of an uncharacteristically hard journey.
  4. “We were so convinced that we were going to win the Kentucky Derby,” said jockey Luis Saez, who became the first jockey to win a Triple Crown event when he rode in the Kentucky Derby.
  5. However, we have had a somewhat unfortunate start.
  6. And Cox was forewarned of this.
  7. For Saez, winning the Triple Crown with Maximum Security in the 2019 Derby was a measure of redemption because he thought he had won his first Triple Crown with the horse.
  8. This time, there was no DQ call.
  9. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of the United Arab Emirates, is the owner of Essential Quality.
  10. I wanted to express my gratitude to Sheikh Mohammed, who has been helping us for the past two years.

“We wouldn’t be here without this horse and his assistance, so I just wanted to express my gratitude to him.” The race was held without the participation of a horse trained by Baffert, who was barred from participating by the New York Racing Association when Medina Spirit tested positive for a steroid following the Derby.

Betamethasone is illegal at any level on race day in Kentucky, Maryland, and New York, and is outlawed in Kentucky, Maryland, and New York.

After five weeks following the Derby and three weeks following the Preakness, the event returned to its usual position as the third leg of the Triple Crown.

And it was back to the “test of the champion” distance, with thousands of mainly maskless fans swarming the big grandstand at Belmont Park to see the action. This article was written with assistance from the Associated Press.
